Volunteer on Seabrook Island: Giving Back

Posted 05/05/2020

On Seabrook Island, we believe that part of any great community is its volunteer force. The Seabrook Island Club is taking necessary safety precautions and carefully monitoring social distancing as we work through the COVID-19 pandemic as a community. But there are still plenty of ways to lend a helping hand six-feet apart! We’re proud that our community steps up to be good neighbors and stewards of our beautiful island through good times and bad.

Read on for some special Charleston, SC area volunteer opportunities you can participate in from the safety of your home!

Fields to Families

Although coming out to the farm to help harvest fresh produce to those in need isn’t in the cards at the moment, you can still help support by donating online at https://www.fieldstofamilies.org/. The annual Oyster Roast is still on the table in the near future and something we can all look forward to. Fresh produce is still being delivered safely to those in need, so if you know of anyone who may be in need during these hard times be sure to spread the word.

Lowcountry Orphan Relief

Lowcountry Orphan Relief (LOR) provides support services and aid to meet the needs of Lowcountry children identified as at-risk or suffering from abandonment, abuse, and/or neglect. While volunteer opportunities have been adjusted for COVID-19 safety, there are still ways to volunteer your time and resources. LOR accepts donations of gently used clothing to distribute to children in need. Donations are currently paused, but now is a great time to reorganize your family’s closets. Sort what to keep and what to give when donations are accepted again.

You can also help young adults that have recently aged out of the foster care system by donating resources for ‘adulting kits.’ These kits provide young adults with kitchen necessities, comforter sets, laundry supplies, pillows, and other home essentials. To support this program, email nulani@lorkids.org. Get the latest updates on how to volunteer by following Lowcountry Orphan Relief on Facebook!

Charleston Friends of the Library

Become a Friend of the Library at the Charleston Public Library. Your tax-deductible contribution helps fund library programs, gives you access to members-only preview events and book sales, and secures your invitation to the Friends’ Annual Meeting in November. Money raised by the Friends supports a wide variety of programming like STEM learning activities for children, computer classes for job training, and lectures from local historians, just to name a few. When you become a Friend of the Library you join thousands of others in Charleston who want our libraries to have the resources they need to serve our community. You can show your support by signing up today, membership is only $40 for families and lasts an entire year.

Pet Helpers

There’s no better time to adopt a pet in need than now! Take this time in your quarantine to welcome a new furry friend into your home. Volunteering at Pet Helpers is fun and rewarding! As a volunteer, you contribute to the success of Pet Helpers as you facilitate adoptions, fundraising, and general public awareness of Pet Helpers.

Supporting Local Businesses

Another great way to support your neighbors is by shopping local. Businesses in our neighboring Freshfields Village have recently begun reopening with adjusted hours and extra precautions to keep everyone safe. Get the latest updates at https://freshfieldsvillage.com/.

Remember that while we are apart, we are not isolated and we can continue to embrace the labor of love it takes to keep Seabrook strong. For the latest updates on reopenings and precautions on the island, visit Seabrook’s Emergency Preparedness page.
